The JDI uses the Zoom video service for Office Hours and Conferences.
- Conferences are mandatory and usually take place on the first, fifth and eleventh weeks of the semester.
- Office Hours are held on the remaining nine weeks of the semester. They are optional for students but are highly encouraged.
Preparing for Video Sessions
Before your course starts, please go to the
ZOOM DOWNLOAD CENTER and install the Zoom Client for Meetings on your computer or the Zoom Cloud Meetings app for your tablet or smartphone.
You do not need to create a zoom account or sign up for Zoom.
Connecting to Conferences and Office Hours
Although Zoom supports an audio-only telephone (dial-in) connection, it is important to use the video conference feature so that you can see what the instructor is presenting.
To start the video connection: Click on the Video Conference link in the class module for the week.
If for some reason you are unable to use Zoom video, dial in to the audio part of the call using the Zoom toll-free dial in numbers.
- 877-369-0926
- 877-853-5247
- For global dial-in numbers: https://zoom.us/zoomconference.
Please do not use dial-in unless it is the only way that you can participate.
Protocol for Video Conference Calls
Once the conference starts, open the Chat session and type your name to sign in and confirm your participation.
Zoom has a built-in chat function. It provides a way to check-in, ask questions, and request permission to talk (aka raise your hand). To open the chat window, click on the chat icon at the bottom of the screen.
Please mute your microphone when you are not talking to reduce background noise. Use the icons at the bottom of the Zoom page to mute/unmute your audio and turn on/off your camera. If you joined the conference by dial-in, *6 with your phone keypad toggles mute/unmute and *9 is the “raise hand” command.
During the conference, you may be instructed to respond to a question in the chat session or via voice. Before you speak, remember to click on the mute icon to unmute your audio.
- To ask a question in the chat session, type ?? followed by your question.
- To make a statement in the chat session, type // followed by the topic you would like to discuss.
- The facilitator will recognize you when it’s your turn.
Remember: MUTE your audio when you are not speaking
